Neon, We need more Neon!

Here is the after..looking south on Broadway near Washington. Jolly Joan was in Morgan's Alley. You can see the neon lights on Marx Jewelers in both pictures.

The Ara-Vista Motel was located at 9449 SW Barbur near SW 36th.  Top's Drive-In was right next door

I'm not sure when it was demolished but this Wendy's was built on the location in 1983

Hey, maybe if we put brick on the Wendy's people will still think we're the cool drive in that we tore down.  Wink

Corner of SW 5th and Yamhill in the early 1950s. Notice the Fred Meyer Drug on the right. That was his second store, a self serve drug store built in 1928. It was demolished and in 1990 Pioneer Place was built. The Kress Building across the street houses Williams Sonoma, and the grassy area is the lawn of Pioneer Courthouse. Meier & Frank (now Macy's) is the light building on the left. I see this corner everyday as I exit MAX in the morning.

Rose Manor Motel- SE McLoughlin near 17th and Holgate. Future home of 24 Hour Fitness. This place was in operation well into 2005. It was demolished after that but the beat up neon sign stayed on the site for months. I went by here 2 weeks ago and the sign was taken down.

In talking with my neighbor, I found out her parents were the owners of the Knickerbocker (as well as a motel on the coast and one in Camus).  She's looking for photos to share with us and was thrilled to hear of the MCM League's work to preserve Interstate's neon corridor.  She said she wished we were around when they turned the Knickerbocker into the Budget.  She has great stories about Interstate back in the 50's and the traveling salesman who were the Knickerbocker's bread and butter.
