November Meeting

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

November is going to be a fantastic meeting for the MCM League that you will not want to miss! Our meeting will be held at The Wedgewood Home of Tomorrow. Yes, the house with that awesome zigzag roof we’ve all been lusting after to see inside. This Mid-Century Modern classic was designed by Donald Blair and William Fletcher in 1958 as a display home for Wedgewood homes and won an AIA Merit Award in 1960. Wedgewood asked the architects to create a house of the future, pulling out all of the stops and reimaging past notions about residential design. The architects of the Home of Tomorrow found inspiration in the Modernist movement as well as the International Style. Taking a cue from the painter Mondrian they employed bold colors and geometric patterns that are scattered throughout the home and still current today.

We will also have a guest speaker for this meeting Master Craftsmen Patrick O’Neill, owner of Greenline Fine Woodworking, will speak on how he has recreated the craftsmanship details of mid-century NW Regional style architecture of John Yeon and Pietro Belluschi using materials that are available today. Patrick O’Neil was the craftsman behind building the recent Belluschi exhibit that we visited in September.

Meet, greet & viewing of the Home of Tomorrow will be from 5-6 pm. Tours of the Home of Tomorrow will take place during this time lead by the owner, Jeff Myers. Meeting is at 6pm sharp. League business will be addressed, officer voting will take place and our guest speaker will follow. This meeting will be a POTLUCK, feel free to bring a dish to share. The MCM League will provide mixers; you may bring your own adult beverage if so inclined. This event is open to everyone, not just official League members, so don’t miss it.

Sunday, November 18th
1300 NE 117th Ave
Portland, OR 97220

Don’t forget to get your officer nominations in by email before our November meeting to admin@mcmleague.org All officer positions are open for the year of 2013 and will be voted on during our November meeting.

Building Blocks LLC Announce Renovation Launch of Architect Frank Lawrence Shell Former Private Residence

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Portland, OR – June 8, 2011 – Building Blocks llc, architectural preservation re-modelers, announce the commencement of a renovation project of the Frank Shell family home originally built in 1960. The home features original teak woodwork throughout, three atriums, and dramatic “saw-tooth” roof-line. Primarily a public/educational project architect, Frank Shell created his home as a showcase of a unique form of “pinch and open” relationship between space and light, creating a naturalistic yet modern placement for a family burrow. Rooms are exposed to light through one or more complete glass walls, oversize windows, and numerous skylights which compliment nearby atrium rooms.

Located within walking distance to the warm and family friendly Multnomah Village, this home offers authentic mid-century living with the advantages of 20th Century efficiency.

A forgotten Belluschi home awaits reconstruction

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Great article posted on Daily Journal of Commerce of Oregon:

Belluschi Pavillion

POSTED: Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 03:42 PM PT BY: Nathalie Weinstein

In a 48-foot-by-10-foot storage unit several miles south of Portland, pieces of the city’s architectural history are waiting to be reassembled.

They belong to a house built in 1949 on a woodsy lot in Lake Oswego. The structure may be modest – it’s only 921 square feet – but its architect, the late Pietro Belluschi, is legendary in Portland.

Now, more than 60 years later, local builder Tim Mather of MCM Construction plans to reconstruct the house on Marylhurst University’s campus and unveil a Belluschi design that, until recently, few people knew existed.
