About the book:
In 2006, Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond, a non-profit organization which celebrates and promotes 20th-century modern architecture and design, contacted legendary photographer Julius Shulman to record Chicago’s modernist residential architectural heritage. Chicago, America’s First City of Architecture, and its modern architecture proved to be the ideal subject for Shulman’s final book project before his death in 2009. JULIUS SHULMAN: CHICAGO MID-CENTURY MODERNISM (Rizzoli; May 2010, ISBN: 9780847832873; $60.00 US) features the elegantly modern Minsk House, designed by Keck & Keck in 1955; the 1960 Burton Frank House, a mid-century modern gem; architect Harry Weese’s inspired modernist house and studio of 1957; and many other modern masterpieces by Edward Dart, Bertrand Goldberg, Paul Schweikher’s home and studio, Edward Humrich (pictured on the cover), and Ralph Rapson among others.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER / AUTHOR: Julius Shulman documented the most important architecture of our time for more than seventy years, and his work is published and exhibited widely. Gary Gand is a concert sound engineer, musician, and Modern furniture collector based in Chicago. He helped found and serves as Vice President of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond, the architecture preservation organization which promotes the protection of architecturally significant houses built from the 1930s to the 1960s. With a motto of “preservation through appreciation,” Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond works tirelessly to protect these endangered properties. Gand was assisted with the book by CBB secretary Joan Gand, CBB president Joe Kunkel, member Dan Obermaier, and all of the homeowners who were interviewed and whose homes appear in the book.

In honor of sunny days, and dreams of tropical beaches, our next meeting will be tiki themed! Come on out to the President and Webmaster’s house in Parkrose Heights, and enjoy an evening in their basement tiki bar, “The Sandy Bottom.”

With Tiki Kon coming up the following weekend (which includes The Sandy Bottom on the home bar tour), and the annual San Diego event “Tiki Oasis” in mid-August, you may be in need of a vintage Hawaiian dress or shirt….??? Well, you’re in luck! The league’s President will be unleashing a rack of vintage barkcloth Hawaiian clothing one hour before the scheduled public meeting. Stop by at 5pm and shop for your next Hawaiian outfit before he sells them at Tiki Kon and Tiki Oasis!

Our show-n-tell will of course, be tiki themed, so feel free to bring an item or two to share with others. Hawaiian attire encouraged!

It’s that time of year again! Lots of league members come together to sell their vintage and used wares. Lots of fun stuff to buy! If you’ve never attended one of our sales, your missing out. It’s full of members who collect all kinds of mid-century and vintage things, but have collected too much! You don’t have to spend all day going from garage sale to garage sale looking for vintage, it’s all going to be here!

If your interested in selling, contact info@mcmleague.org - $10 for members, $12 for non-members to sell all your stuff!

Our topic of interest will be about summertime entertaining. Got a fun BBQ recipe you’d like to share? A vintage apron you wear while grilling? Fun picnic accessories or vintage diner advertising? Anything associated with summer entertaining or diner culture would be great to spark the imagination for this summer’s festivities. Please keep the number of items to share to a couple, and respect the establishment by not bringing in large items.

This month’s show-n-tell topic will be about tips for furniture repair and restoration. We will discuss products to use for cleaning and reconditioning, and answer questions about how to get that piece of furniture to sparkle. Bring in any handyman books, magazines or articles that you would like to share with the group.

MCMLeague’s Monthly Meeting: Sunday May 24th, 6m

The MCMLeague’s next meeting will be held April 25th at 6pm – this month’s meeting will be held at a recently joined member’s home, this time a Robert Rummer home in Beaverton! Jeffrey and Todd have been gracious enough to open up their recently purchased Rummer, and are excited to share it with other members.

Last month’s meeting was held at a Rummer house in Gresham, and the topic was “Home Renovation/Remodeling” – since it is spring and many of you are thinking of outside projects this summer, it would be fun to have a discussion topic at the next meeting focused toward mid-century landscaping, gardening, patios, decks, etc. Bring any books, photos, or stories to the meeting to share!

Some snacks and wine will be provided, but we ask you to help contribute by bringing a hot dish or some snacks and beverages.

Last meeting we handed out grocery totes with the MCMLeague logo on it to paid members. We will bring the ones for members who could not join us last month to the next meeting. We hope to see you!

Street of Eames is Portland’s annual modern home tour. Each April, this citywide event recognizes the city’s best examples of mid-century modern and contemporary modern residential architecture.

The goal of the tour, however, is to raise money for after-school programs for homeless students at two Portland public schools – Chapman Elementary in NW Portland, and Beach Elementary in N Portland. Street of Eames is essentially a home tour to help the homeless.

This year’s tour includes architectural marvels from: Oringdulph, Path, Rummer, Seed, Storrs, Waechter, White and Yeon.

What is PechaKucha?

“Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.”

It’s going to be a fun, entertaining evening. The presentations cover topics all over the map, some serious, some funny, some informational, but none will be over 5 minutes long, so you can’t go wrong! We hope you can join us.

We also accept checks at our meetings, in fact, the next meeting is at the treasurers house – how easy is that?!
